About the Band

Tried & True plays and sings a wide selection of bluegrass gospel and classic bluegrass that represents the very best of the genre. From classic to contemporary bluegrass, our repertoire appeals to longtime bluegrass fans and to those just discovering this exciting form of American music. Most of our songs come from the bluegrass gospel tradition. We also play ballads and songs about home and family. Our band features harmony singing, powerful picking and driving rhythm.

We enjoy playing music that reflects the hope and joy abundant in the gift of salvation we have found in Jesus Christ and we seek to honor Him through our music and performances.

About the Members

Jessica True: Our bass player grew up in Evergreen, Colorado.  She also lived in Alaska and Chicago during parts of her high school years. Jessica attended Chadron State College in Nebraska. After graduation she worked for Amoco Production Company in Denver. Jessica has loved the Lord from an early age and has been active in the church since her 20s. She met Bob in their church singles group and they were married in 1992. They have a son and daughter. Jessica was a stay-at-home mom for many years and recently re-entered the workforce as a teacher's aid. Jessica is especially gifted as a singer. Besides the bass, she also plays guitar and autoharp.

Bob True: Our mandolin player grew up in Des Moines, Iowa, where someone gave him their unwanted soundtrack to a movie called Deliverance, which featured banjo and bluegrass guitar. Soon he was learning to play his dad's old banjo. He didn't get far with the banjo before discovering rock 'n' roll, the blues, and the electric guitar, a combination he didn't outgrow for many years. Bob moved to Denver in the 1980s. He was a newspaper editor in small Colorado towns for several years before taking a job with state government as a communications specialist. He rediscovered bluegrass and began re-learning the guitar, bluegrass style. Later he learned mandolin. During this time he joined a church where he met and married Jessica. The couple played together on a church worship team for many years.

Mike Wenger: Our guitar player is a native Coloradan who grew up on the family farm that his grandparents settled near Yuma. His early days were filled with hard work on the farm where the family raised cattle and wheat. Mike has been playing guitar since high school. He discovered country music through his father and enjoyed singers such as Johnny Cash and Hank Williams. Mike also liked the rock bands of the 1970s and 80s. He went to Sterling College in Kansas on a football scholarship. He met his wife, Sue, at Sterling College. They now have four children and live in Denver where Mike is an executive for a financial institution. Sue home-schools the youngest children. Mike sang in the church choir for many years and played guitar with Bob at men's retreats. Mike has performed on stage at Denver's historic Paramount Theater, where he demonstrated his considerable skills as an Elvis impersonator. (With apologies to the King)

Vic Egli: We're happy to have Vic joining us recently on the banjo. We met Vic at a local jam session and have been delighted with his solid banjo playing and his enthusiasm for the music. A few years ago the pastor of his church suggested he take his old banjo down off the wall and start playing. Since then, he's been playing in his church's bluegrass band and with a prison ministry at the state penitentiary in Canon City. Vic is a self-employed contractor. He learned the construction trade in Iowa where he grew up in a Mennonite community "where everyone was a carpenter." The start of his musical background was playing bass in dance orchestras and rock 'n' roll bands in Iowa. He once played the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa, known as the site of Buddy Holly's final performance. He studied music at the University of Northern Colorado and studied architecture at Iowa State. He lives in Aurora with his wife, LeeAnn, and their two daughters.
